In 2003, two board members, Ross Hinton and Mary Lou White, were brainstorming different fundraising possibilities for the Club. With Fredericksburg's unique shopping and girlfriend getaway opportunities, it seemed natural to create a golf-style tournament around shopping.
Ross' sister, Margaret Hampton, from Austin and Mary Lou's sister, Nyna Dolby, from California gathered a few of their friends for the first tournament. Participating stores were invited to donate to the Boys & Girls Club a small percentage of what the shopper's spent in their stores.
From those humble beginnings, the Shopping Tournament is now a signature fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of the Texas Hill Country, a much-anticipated event for the community and a wonderful girlfriend getaway that has a philanthropic purpose.
